The First. The One. The Only.
Breck Rothage along side lifeguard tower at Moss Point, Laguna Beach
There is only one Fine Artist to have their art adorning a lifeguard tower in Laguna Beach, CA — Breck Rothage.
Breck’s ‘Smooth Roll Blues’ is artfully wrapped around a new lifeguard tower at Moss Point [also known as Moss Cove] in Laguna Beach.
When spending $2.7 million on an overall beach access renovation with new staircase, view landings and landscaping, there was to be a new lifeguard stand made of fiberglass placed permanently on the beach.
Those who live in this community were not at all happy with having this industrial tower ruin the look and feel of their paradise in Laguna. They did not want their precious view filled with an eyesore.

The homeowners did not want their precious view filled with an eyesore and the neighborhood did not want to see an industrial fiberglass structure spoil their morning walks among the sand, cliffs and tidepools.
Moss Point is a jewel among the treasure of Laguna Beach. For decades, this cove has been the most photographed spot for family photos and engagement shoots.
The city of Laguna Beach — after much ‘discussion’ — agreed to go to the trouble and expense of removing it each year for the off season, then replacing it. [June 23 through Labor Day]
This would be quite a task — twice each year — requiring a special crane and costing some $20,000 annually.

A collector, who happens to own Moss Point [.624 acres], reached out to Breck and asked if he would consider helping by having his art cover the lifeguard tower.
Breck — a lover of Laguna — agreed to take on the challenge. ‘Smooth Roll Blues’ was chosedn to be wrapped on a structure with many changes in shapes, dimensions and angles.
Measuring over 20 feet wide at the top and 9.5 feet at bottom and 7.5 feet high, Breck engineered the wave to have consistent visual flow meticulously crafting 7 distinct pieces. A graphic engineering feat!
The neighborhood no longer wants it to be removed each year for the off season — they love it!

“This is quite an honor, considering the fact that Laguna Beach is known to be an artist colony for over 100 years and home to the world famous Festival of Arts & Pageant of the Masters [popular Sawdust Festival as well]. Surely, there is no shortage of fine artists to choose from.”

“A lifeguard tower that once concerned neighbors at Moss Street Beach for being “too industrial looking ” in a small cove known for its steep cliffs and surrounding historic homes is now being celebrated as something that will add beauty to an already picturesque scene.”
