SALTSHAKER

Endlessly gaze into this classic with the dynamic of the powerful salty crash on a seashore boulder.  So much to enjoy, round and round and back again — you can find yourself looking at this more than your flatscreen, if next to it.  That is a fact!

From the shore of Little Corona in Newport Beach, CA

Breck"This is actually the very first of the ocean series, when I had decided to go back down to the place that I love — the seashore.  This was the first place I had in mind.  I had lived a couple of blocks away in the 3rd grade and just some of the best memories.  I knew this spot well.

I spent two weeks waiting for things to line up — I watched daily.  The tide had to be a certain height — too high and the sea would roll over the rock with no crash/spash.  Too low and there would not be enough water to create a noticeable impact.  The swell had to be significant enough to create a large enough wave — at the same time of having the right height of tide.  Lastly, I wanted a clear sunny morning — something which is out of the norm at this time of year on the Southern California coast.

That morning, down there early, I watched some 800 waves crash into that rock.  Very selectively, I captured 134 images — one at a time, with no 'burst' shooting.  Each time, I thought, 'I've got it!'

The next day, as I reviewed my captures, I threw 103 away right off the bat.  With fresh eyes on the third day, I chose 'Saltshaker' out of the remaining 21 contenders."
